U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins said the agency plans to deepen coordination with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), including holding joint meetings and potentially conducting joint examinations of regulated firms.
Speaking about efforts to align oversight of digital asset markets, Atkins said the two regulators are working toward a formal memorandum of understanding designed to strengthen collaboration and information sharing.
The initiative reflects a broader push to harmonize U.S. crypto regulation between the SEC and CFTC, which historically have had overlapping jurisdiction and occasional disputes over oversight of digital assets.
Atkins indicated the agencies will coordinate more closely at both the leadership and staff levels, including regular meetings and collaborative supervisory efforts, as part of a wider effort to provide clearer regulatory frameworks for the industry.
The move comes as policymakers in Washington continue to debate legislation that could define the regulatory boundaries between the SEC and CFTC for digital assets.
